LAYOUT PHASE 2 -- PART 4: "Lighting"

I needed more lighting for the rear of the layout, where the beach is, so I bought two reflector lamps.
Heat Lamp Shade

Yes, Part 4 was short, but the next post will be the grand reveal!

LAYOUT PHASE 2 -- PART 3: "Scenics"

After I laid down the track bed to get an idea of where everything would need to be, I took it off to put down some beautiful scenics.

1. Dish rags and dish towels make a great grass/foliage substitute.

2. I used old packing paper to make a base for the sandy beach.

3. Using cardboard, I made a lip so the sand won't go all over the floor.

4. The sand looked great.
(My supply of sand was running out quickly! I had underestimated how much I would need!)

5. I added Spanish Moss and Preserved Green Moss to many locations.

You will probably start seeing this layout appear in remakes, but don't expect the final "Behind the Scenes" post until spring. (I can't finish it because my supply of rocks from my gravel driveway is currently locked in under snow and ice.)

LAYOUT PHASE 2 -- PART 2: "The Mache Rock Face and Infrastructure"

The infrastructure of the impressive topography Phase 2.1 was completed by using 2" x 4" risers. Here's how:

1. I bought 6 - 8 foot 2"x 4"
2. I measured them out with the corresponding track, and cut them to size.
3. I nailed them together, making several risers.

4. Then, I used a sheet of OSB and carefully cut out a wider circle to crown the risers, with a jigsaw.

Final:

For the majority of the rock work on Phase 2.1, I used a paper mache technique I am perfecting.
Here's how:

1. I made a mixture of 60% glue to 40% water, and stirred.

2. I then used an old, wide paint brush and put sections of newspaper on the cardboard netting I made.

3. Then, I let it dry overnight. The next day, I used a color of acrylic called "burnt sand" and "burnt sunset" for the coloring of the rock face.

4. I applied it to the infrastructure with hot glue, and added scenics, as seen below.

500 Subscribers!

It is very, very exciting that 2.5 years after first enrolling on YouTube I have acquired 500 subscribers. Thank you all for your generous support and engagement. It is truly appreciated.

You'll be in a quite a predicament if you don't watch "Percy's Predicament!"

The second season  of Thomas and Friends just couldn't seem to stop all the consecutive accident episodes, with Episodes 1, 11, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 and 26 all containing a crash sequence!

Here is Episode 20: "Percy's Predicament!"

LAYOUT PHASE 2 -- PART 1: "Planning"

I had begun to obtain enough resources that I decided a second layout table would be lovely!

  • It was designed as a 5 foot by 6 foot table.
  • It would feature much topography, including two hills, two ridges, a rocky headland and a cliff.

Different from some methods of planning for layouts, I simply built the exact layout I was going to construct with extra track right on the floor. Here's the "blueprint."

Now, I finally purchased the two 6' x 2.5' tables and built just the track
on top of them. I changed the location of the switcher. The switch on the
far-left side is now on the bottom curve. Unfortunately, I just used "Paint" to
illustrate this since I haven't taken a recent picture.
